Love him or hate him, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld provided a powerful endorsement for the value of photographs during his Congressional testimony this week. When asked why earlier written warnings of prisoner abuse issued by the International Red Cross hadn't stirred the same response as the recent photos have, Rumsfeld replied, "It's the photographs that gives one the vivid realization of what actually took place . . . words don't do it."
An official with Amnesty International (whose name I didn't catch) was also recorded saying, "pictures are crucial for getting the public turned on to the story."

Remember these words the next time an editor asks you to sign away your copyright, offers you a token sum because, "it won't run very large" or, "we NEVER pay more than that," or tries to tell you that they can probably just
find something from stock to "fill the space." Human beings' ability to
draw pictures predates our ability to read and write by tens, even hundreds, of thousands of years. And even in this age of image overload and digital everything, photographs still remain one of the most powerful forms of communication.

Go out and make good images, and don't let anyone diminish their value.

Festival de la photographie de mode (Cannes)
Pour sa deuxième édition, Cannes Photo Mode présente une sélection de cinquante photographies de mode dont une grande exposition des deux principaux invités du Festival : Jacques Olivar et Steve Hiett. Cannes devient ainsi la scène partagée par les différents acteurs et professionnels de la photographie de mode. En donnant chair à une certaine idée de la beauté, du sensuel, de l'érotisme, cet art a su, grâce à ses compositions originales, sa pertinence, sa technique et son imaginaire, sublimer son sujet. Pour la première fois, la Croisette et la Roseraie du port Canto sont “habillées” par des tirages photographiques sur bâches de trois mètres par cinq, qui permettront aux visiteurs de profiter d'œuvres prodigieuses dans des dimensions inattendues (du 19 juin au 19 juillet). D'autre part, une sélection de photographies ainsi que des grands formats noir et blanc ou couleur sont présentés dans les salles du Palm Beach Casino et sur sa terrasse (du 19 juin au 31 août).

La section "top" a été créée il y a quelques temps et elle vient d'être remise à jour. Quelles sont les photos les plus "tendance" du moment ? Un outil vous permet de savoir quelles ont été les photos les plus "zoomées" par les utilisateurs du site.

Nouvelle ergonomie du site
Il y a 3 mois commençait la phase de test d'érgonomie du site www.photographe-de-mode.com. Ce test s'est transformé en en remaniement quasi total des sections couleur et noir et blanc. Quand on clique sur une vignette, l'image sélectionnée apparaît puis les autres images de la même série viennent se mettre en dessous. Cela réduit considérablement le nombre de clicks à produire et facilite le chargement à l'écran des images. De plus, 2 séries mode ont été rajoutées ainsi qu'une série de photos de lingerie.

Grève de SMS du 5 mai
Les SMS sont à 10 centimes, faites passer ! En avril dernier nous avions fait un appel à la grève des SMS (les opérateurs de téléphonie mobile réalisaient des marges de 600% sur vos SMS envoyés). Résultat : les SMS chez Orange sont passés à 10 centimes au lieu de 15 centimes.

Expo Guy Bourdin à Paris
Le Jeu de Paume a été chargé par le ministère de la Culture et de la Communication, de mettre en œuvre une politique ambitieuse en faveur de la photographie et de l’image dans un lieu prestigieux qui sera une référence dans ce domaine. Pour inaugurer ces nouvelles activités, Régis Durand, directeur du Jeu de Paume (Place Concorde à Paris), propose deux expositions : Éblouissement et Guy Bourdin, présentées du 24 juin au 12 septembre 2004, avec le soutien de Neuflize Vie.

Si mie mi s-ar parea normal sa existe in Ro mai multe asociatii de amatori si mai multe organizartii profesionale de fotografi; dar este o tzara deosebita, si uite ca in cinshpe ani nu a aparut nimic functionabil, si aici poate fi in continuare posibil orice, sa nu apara nimic inca o mie de ani sau inclusiv poate sa apara ceva pentru toti fotografii, cu posibilele avantaje si cu certele dezavantaje care ar decurge din asta; in Franta exista , ca exemplu, mai multa cultura vizuala decit la urmasii lu` Dracula, si acolo avem care va sa zica mai multe :

The upper range of human air conduction hearing is believed to be no higher than about 24,000 Hz (1); nevertheless, there have been reports of humans hearing well into the ultrasonic range but only when the ultrasonic stimuli are delivered by bone conduction (2-4). Furthermore, ultrasonic bone conduction hearing in humans has been readily demonstrated in various conditions of auditory pathology, including sensorineural hearing loss and middle ear disorders (2). Ultrasonic stimulation of the skull with frequencies up to 108 kHz induces a perception of sound within the head without any sensation of cutaneous feeling (2-4), suggesting that these high frequencies are being processed in a modality other than the vibratory-somatosensory system.
In contrast to the excellent frequency discrimination found in the midsonic auditory range, ultrasonic perception has been described as having poor frequency-resolving ability (3). This interpretation originates from reports that the pitch elicited by ultrasonic stimulation is similar to the pitch of the highest air conduction frequency detectable, that is 8 to 16 kHz (4). Because the perceived pitch of ultrasonic tones was associated with the upper limit of conventional air conduction hearing, these investigators assumed that the perceived audible sensation produced by ultrasonic stimuli consisted only of fixed pitch with monotonal quality. In addition, it was assumed that ultrasonic detection was a by-product of some form of cochlear processing that activated sensorineural elements within the classical auditory system (4) and, as such, offered little in the form of an additional communication channel.
We next sought to determine the ability of humans to resolve frequency in the ultrasonic range, using a paradigm in which ten additional normal, young adult subjects (N2)(23 to 25 years of age) were required to indicate just noticeable differences (JNDs) in pitch to tonal stimuli of 6, 11, 2, 32, and 40 kHz (7). The subjects were able to discriminate changes in frequency, although there was a steady increase in the JNDs from 2 to 40 kHz (Fig. 1C). In the auditory range the JNDs ranged from 0.4 to 1.0% of the stimulus frequency, whereas in the ultrasonic range the JNDs were on the order of 10% of the stimulus frequency. These data reinforce the premise that pitch discrimination does occur in the ultrasonic range but that frequency discrimination in the ultrasonic range differs from that in the more conventional auditory range.
We next sought to determine if individuals with impaired high frequency hearing could detect ultrasonic speech. Ten older subjects (50 to 82 years of age) (N4) were given complete audiograms [as in (5)], including ultrasonic testing, and these threshold data were compared to those previously generated in normal, young adults. At frequencies between 1,000 and 10,000 Hz, all older subjects exhibited substantial hearing loss typical of age-related deafness (Fig. 1A). However, both subject groups displayed similar ultrasonic thresholds regardless of age or hearing loss in the conventional auditory range (Fig. 1B) These data confirm the ability of human subjects to detect sounds in the ultrasonic range despite a significant hearing loss normally associated with aging (2). Furthermore, in a subsequent experiment with five additional subjects with age-related hearing loss (55 to 75 years of age) (N5), speech stimuli were amplitude-modulated onto a 28-kHz carrier frequency and presented in a single-word, oral-response discrimination task (10). Mean accuracy was found to be 58% with a range of 45 to 70%. All of the subjects discriminated words at a level considerably better than chance. The lower scores for the older group relative to the young group were due to incorrect identification of a single consonant sound within the target word.

Doctor says Terri is Aware and Feels Pain - Updated
From the NRO: A doctor who has seen Terri Schiavo this month says she seems to be aware of what's going on and appears to feel pain. [pdf file]

William Polk Cheshire, Jr., M.D,. M.A, F.A.A.N.is a neurologist practicing the State of Florida who believes that it can be ethically permissible to discontinue artificially provided nutrition and hydration for persons in a permanent vegetative state. He writes,

Having now reviewed the relevant facts, having met and observed Ms. Schiavo in person, and having reflected deeply on the moral and ethical issues, I would like to explain why I have changed my mind in regard to this particular case.
He explains that Terri was found by court appointed doctors to be in a state of PVS, meaning wakefulness without awareness and lacking the integrated function of the cerebral cortex. Related to Terri's PVS diagnosis he suggests,
There remain, in fact, huge uncertainties, in regard to Terri’s true neurological status. Although exploring such questions may be uncomfortable, I believe that medicine has an obligation to ascertain the neurological facts to the highest possible degree of certainty.
One of his first statements in the seven page document addresses the lack of adequate medical imaging for the purpose of diagnosis. He states,
Although Terri has undergone structural imaging studies of her brain (such as the CT scan which I have reviewed). She ahas not, to my knowledge, undergoing functional imaging studies, such as positron emission topography (PET) or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The structural studies have shown substantial loss of cerebral cortex which was deprives of blood supply for more than 40 minutes in 1990, but there does remain some cerebral cortex.
He follows with a lengthy summary of his direct examination of Terri, medical records, and hours of video tape. I've (roughly) reproduced it below (emphasis mine).


Based on my review of extensive medical records documenting Terri’s care over the years, on my personal observations of Terri, and on my observations of Terri’s responses in the many hours of videotapes taken in 2002, she demonstrates a number of behaviors that I believe case a reasonable doubt on the prior diagnosis of PVS.
Her behavior is frequently context-specific. For example, her facial expression brightens and she smiles in response to the voice of familiar persons such as her parents or her nurse. Her agitation subsides and her facial demeanor soften when quiet music is played. When jubilant piano music is played, her face brightens, she lifts her eyebrows, smiles, and even laughs. Her lateral gaze toward the tape player is sustained for many minutes. Several times I witnessed Terri briefly, albeit inconsistently, laugh in response to a humorous comment someone in the room had made. I did not see her laugh in the absence of someone else’s laughter.
Although she does not seem to track or follow visual objects consistently or for long periods of time, she does fixate her gaze on colorful objects or human faces for some 15 seconds at a time and occasionally follow with her eyes at least briefly as these objects move from side to side. When I first walked into her room, she immediately turned her head toward me and looked directly at my face. There was a look of curiosity or expectation in her express, and she maintained eye contact for about half a minute. Later, when she again looked at me, she brought her lips together as if to pronounce the letter "O", and although for a moment it appeared that she might be making an intentional effort to speak, her fade then fell blank, and no words came out.
Although I did not hear Terri utter distinct words, she demonstrates emotional expressivity by her use of single syllable vocalizations such as "ah," making cooing sounds, or by expressing guttural sounds of annoyance or moaning appropriate to the context of the situation. The context-specific range and variability of her vocalizations suggest at least a reasonable probability of the processing of emotional thought within her brain. There have been reports of Terri rarely using actual words specific to her situational context. The July 25, 2003 affidavit of speech pathologist Sara Green Mele, MS, on page 6, reads, "The records of Mediplex reflect the fact that she has said ‘stop’ in apparent response to a medical procedure being done to her." The Adult Protective Services team has been unable to retrieve those original medical records I this instance.
Although Terri has not consistently followed commands there appear to be some notable exceptions. In the taped examination by Dr. Hammesfahr from 2002, when asked to close her eyes she began to blink repeatedly. Although it was unclear whether she squeezed her grip when asked, she did appear to raise her right leg four times in succession each time she was asked to do so. Rehabilitation notes from 1991 indicated that she tracked inconsistently, and although did not develop a yes/no communication system, did follow some commands inconsistently and demonstrated good eye contact of family members.
There is a remarkable moment in the videotape of the September 3, 2002 examination by Dr. Hammesfahr that seemed to go unnoticed at the time. At 2:44 p.m., Dr. Hammesfahr had just turned Terri onto her right side to examine her back with a painful sharp stimulus (a sharp piece of wood), to which Terri had responded with signs of discomfort. Well after he ceased applying the stimulus and had returned Terri to a comfortable position, he says to her parents, "So, we’re going to have to roll her over ...," Immediately Terri cries. She vocalizes a crying sound, "Ugh, ha, ha, ha," presses her eyebrows together, and sadly grimaces. It is important to note that, at that moment, no one is touching Terri or causing actual pain. Rather, she appears to comprehend the meaning of Dr. Hammesfahr’s comment and signals her anticipation of pain. This response suggests some degree of language processing and interpretation at the level of the cerebral cortex.

Description de la fonction

Créatif généralement free-lance travaillant pour le compte de clients directs ou d'agences de communication, le photographe réalise les prises de vues qui seront utilisées sur différents types de supports imprimés.
Aujourd'hui, cette définition ne correspond cependant plus à la réalité de la profession, les besoins en recrutement étant surtout tournés vers le travail en laboratoire, qui représente près de 90% des offres d'emplois. La profession traverse donc une crise identitaire, accentuée par l'apparition de nouvelles technologies comme le numérique.
Les postes proposés par les laboratoires de photographie (20 à 300 personnes) sont de nature soit technique (développeur, tireur-filtreur) soit manageriale (responsable d'équipe).
Dans la prise de vue qui reste l'activité " artistique " du secteur, on assiste à une hyper-segmentation des professionnels qui exige à chaque fois la parfaite maîtrise de techniques bien particulières : photographie publicitaire, de mode, de spectacle, d'art, sportive, industrielle, d'illustration, aérienne, médicale, de boutique, généraliste etc.

Accessibilité et salaire

Les laboratoires photographiques étant confrontés à une pénurie de main d'œuvre qualifiés, les jeunes diplômés ne rencontrent pas de difficultés à trouver un premier emploi, proposant des possibilités de formation en interne et d'évolution intéressantes.
Il n'en va pas de même pour la prise de vue, les places étant rares et chères. Ainsi, un jeune assistant sera le plus souvent peu rémunéré voire pas du tout s'il intègre un studio réputé, ce poste étant considéré comme un complément à sa formation. A noter des chances d'intégration plus importantes dans la prise de vues industrielle.
Le niveau de salaire est extrêmement variable en laboratoire, du smic à 9000 Frs par mois selon le type de poste occupé. Le photographe indépendant est rémunéré quant à lui, soit à la prise de vues, soit à la journée.

Créativité, sens artistique, parfaite technique photographique, réactivité, organisation, autonomie, sens des responsabilités, aptitudes à la négociation et à la gestion pour les indépendants.

These collections are considered the "hidden gems" of the imagery business - highly respected by creative professionals but with limited global sales, marketing and distribution. Pe mine ma distreaza.. daca cineva se chinuie sa scoata rautati pentru a mi le scuipa in fata, inseamna ca se preocupa de persoana mea.. deci aceeasi chestie ca si cu publicitatea negativa..
Daca el se preocupa si eu traiesc bine merci fara nici o grija, de ce mi-as face probleme tocmai eu?!

Desi nu sunt de acord intrutotul cu ce s-a spus pe aici.. imi pare oricum bine, e un semn de vlaga pe forum-ul asta care cam duce lipsa..
Ce nu am inteles insa, sunt atacurile astea la persoana.. Daca eu sau alex boldea suntem plictisiti de anumite subiecte.. la naiba, putem macar sa o zicem, nu?
Iar cei interesati sa zica si ei "nu, eu nu ma plictisesc, mie imi place".. ce sens are sa facem pe "ofticosii"?:)

N-a venit Sfanta Inchizitie sa interzica discutiile despre sex si sa arda ereticii care fac sex oral pe rug.. :)
Cat despre intelectuali inhibati.. hmm..In locul tau as fi putin mai atenta inainte de a pune astfel de etichete.

Departe de mine asa ceva (ma refer la ultimele randuri ale mesajului tau).Iti atrageam doar atentia ca nu e corect sa incepi cu caracterizarea cuiva despre care nu stii aproape nimic doar pentru ca are o parere diferita de a ta.
Ca e jignitor sau nu , nu era o problema, cico, draga, dar etichetele sunt urate si nu plac nimanui.
Nu cred ca eu am aratat lipsa de respect fata de cineva, oricine.Daca am facut-o te rog sa-mi arati si unde, o sa-mi repar cu siguranta greseala.

Se accepta numai cereri de "iertaciune" ?Ca eu am chef sa injur vreo cativa, cine stie cum se nimeresc pe aici... Hmm.. Poate ma lamureste si pe mine tanti gazda..
Cam atat.. mesaje din dragoste nu am..Alea le soptesc la ureche, nu le "urlu" pe net.
