Edgar Allan Poe

The Raven
[First published in 1845]

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore -
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore -
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
`'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door -
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; -
This it is, and nothing more,'

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
`Sir,' said I, `or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you' - here I opened wide the door; -
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, `Lenore!'
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, `Lenore!'
Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
`Surely,' said I, `surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore -
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; -
'Tis the wind and nothing more!'

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore.
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door -
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door -
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
`Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,' I said, `art sure no craven.
Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore -
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning - little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door -
Bird or beast above the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as `Nevermore.'

But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only,
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered -
Till I scarcely more than muttered `Other friends have flown before -
On the morrow will he leave me, as my hopes have flown before.'
Then the bird said, `Nevermore.'

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,
`Doubtless,' said I, `what it utters is its only stock and store,
Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful disaster
Followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore -
Till the dirges of his hope that melancholy burden bore
Of "Never-nevermore."'

But the raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling,
Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door;
Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking
Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore -
What this grim, ungainly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore
Meant in croaking `Nevermore.'

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing
To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core;
This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining
On the cushion's velvet violet lining that the lamp-light gloated o'er,
But whose velvet violet lining with the lamp-light gloating o'er,
She shall press, ah, nevermore!

Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer
Swung by Seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.
`Wretch,' I cried, `thy God hath lent thee - by these angels he has sent thee
Respite - respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore!
Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe, and forget this lost Lenore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Prophet!' said I, `thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil! -
Whether tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted -
On this home by horror haunted - tell me truly, I implore -
Is there - is there balm in Gilead? - tell me - tell me, I implore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Prophet!' said I, `thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us - by that God we both adore -
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn,
It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels named Lenore -
Clasp a rare and radiant maiden, whom the angels named Lenore?'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting -
`Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken! - quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted - nevermore!

An older, white haired man wa - de Horia D la: 04/05/2005 23:10:21
(la: Trancaneala Aristocrata "2")
An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday
evening with a beautiful young gal at his side. He told the jeweler he
was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend.
The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring and
showed it to him. The old man said, "I don't think you understand, I
want something very special."
At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought
another ring over. "Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000," the jeweler
said. The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled
with excitement. The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it."

The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated,
by check. " I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll
write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and
I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon," he said.

Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweler phoned the old man. "There's
no money in that account."
"I know", said the old man, "but can you imagine the weekend I had?"

By Ron Rovtar

Where exactly is the stock photography industry headed during the next ten to 15 years?

Definitely, somewhere very different from where it is today. If changes during the last decade have been phenomenal, those that occur between now and the year 2020 will be breathtaking.

And, as we discussed in previous articles, the stock industry's future may be very different from what many industry experts predict. Most of us -- experts included -- crave an orderly universe that behaves like the theoretical objects described by Sir Isaac Newton's First Law of Motion.

A moving object, Newton told us, continues moving in the same direction at the same speed unless acted on by an outside force. A clean and understandable explanation -- until you get to those last seven words.

Like it or not, the world is filled with "outside forces."

The stock industry is no exception.

Based on current "motion" within the industry, many observers believe big stock distributors will continue to strengthen their hold on the stock industry. Many think traditional royalty-free will slowly eat away at rights-managed image sales. However, as we noted in the first two articles of this series, things are not always simple.

The first article - - suggested that industry consolidations may just be the market's effort to clean up what is left of an old business paradigm, perhaps stabilizing it under the auspices of a few larger companies. The article proposed that the rapid spread of technology (an "outside force") could create new, more efficient paths to the market and may soon let independent stock photographers bypass traditional distributors altogether.

The second article argued that the market for royalty-free imagery is, for several reasons, probably peaking. Pressure from subscription services, the inability to control theft of royalty-free content, and changes in the kinds of images demanded by graphic designers, publishers and advertising firms were among the reasons cited.

Deci ar iesi in castig oricum si ar avea si casa sau masina si banii.

Simplu, nu-i asa?

Discutii in plus...

Dar in 10 ani? Dar in 30 ani?

Marketul intotdeauna isi revine.

Stock marketul are atatea aspecte: stocks (from penny stocks to blue chips), commodities, options (on stocks, on commodities), mutual funds, bonds, etc.

Ok, pot sa investesc in stock market in real estate funds. Pe cand stock marketul e foarte lichid in majoritatea cazurilor.

A platit $280k.

Pt Ozzy: am vizitat site-ul si am vazut ceva desene. Foarte faine. Felicitari. Ai talent intradevar. Mult succes in viitor.

In ceea ce priveste the real Ozzy: urasc heavy metal iar Ozzy mi se pare cel mai antipatic artist al tuturor timpurilor, indiferent de realizarile lui artistice. Sorry dar asta-i parerea mea personala. Tu in schimb poti sa-l admiri cat vrei, e treaba ta.

Multa bafta,

The trinity:Marx,Engels,Lenin.....CIOCU' MIC !!! - de (anonim) la: 21/03/2004 16:53:00
(la: America, o tara comunista?)
Draga Adacartianu,

you die."

Poti sa-ti pui aceeasi intrebare despre romani.

The Getty Images Money Machine
The popular daily newspaper, USA Today, recently published a copyrighted article (by Byron Acohido) about the top stock photography agency in the world, Getty Images. Although the article focused on tracing Getty's successful rise to the top of the industry, it revealed some interesting numbers. Especially if you are considering working for the company as a freelancer.
First of all, let me reiterate my personal philosophy that I believe good
stock photography is the result of a photographer's (amateur or pro) abiding interest in specific subject areas. For example, wildlife, medicine,
education, children, aviation, sports, and so on. The resulting photographs have the opportunity to be both art and documentary. Eventually they may have historical significance and grow as an asset for a photographer's heirs. In the meantime, if the photographer finds matching markets for his or her interest areas, profits can be made.
If this is your worldview also, then you'll want to turn and run if a Getty recruiter asks you to be part of their freelancer team. Here's why.
I don't pretend to be an economics wizard, but in Pilgrim's Pride
Elementary School, I was pretty good at arithmetic. I think you'll agree
with me that the numbers presented in the USA Today article do not look pretty for freelancers.
They spin out like this.
The 2003 Getty Images gross revenue was $523.2 million, with net income of $64 million. (88% operating costs; 12% net profit). The author is quoted as saying 83% of Getty Images sales comes from freelancers. That's $434,256 ,000 in freelancer photos. Getty gives 40% of that to the freelancers.
That's $173,702,400 .
Getty has 2,500 freelancers (contributors), according to the author. That's $69,480.96 annually to a freelancer, or $190.36 per day (365/yr.).
Running a stock photo business can get to be a marathon, and get to be
expensive. Using Getty Image's own costs/net income ratio (88/12), that
would reduce a freelancer's $69,480.96 gross down to $8,337.72 net annually, or $22.84 per day. But since freelancers are known to be frugal, and government RMA annual statement studies show entrepreneurs to be Spartan,
let's lower the cost percentage (to 76%), and double the net income figure to 24% and make it $45.68 per day, ($5.75 per hour for an 8-hour day).
To produce images, most of your costs are going to be eaten up in camera equipment, travel costs, insurance, lodging and meals.

Love him or hate him, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld provided a powerful endorsement for the value of photographs during his Congressional testimony this week. When asked why earlier written warnings of prisoner abuse issued by the International Red Cross hadn't stirred the same response as the recent photos have, Rumsfeld replied, "It's the photographs that gives one the vivid realization of what actually took place . . . words don't do it."
An official with Amnesty International (whose name I didn't catch) was also recorded saying, "pictures are crucial for getting the public turned on to the story."

Remember these words the next time an editor asks you to sign away your copyright, offers you a token sum because, "it won't run very large" or, "we NEVER pay more than that," or tries to tell you that they can probably just
find something from stock to "fill the space." Human beings' ability to
draw pictures predates our ability to read and write by tens, even hundreds, of thousands of years. And even in this age of image overload and digital everything, photographs still remain one of the most powerful forms of communication.

Go out and make good images, and don't let anyone diminish their value.
