If you are photographing on federal lands, you will want to be familiar with the laws relating to your rights and restrictions. A typical nature photographer does not need a permit to photograph on federal lands. Specifically, a permit is required only for any filming or photography that:

involves the use of a model, set, or prop; or
requires entry into a closed area; or
requires access to the park before or after normal working hours.

A permit is not required for:

A visitor using a camera and/or a recording device for his/her own personal use and within normal visitation areas and hours; or
A commercial photographer not using a prop, model, or set, and staying within normal visitation areas and hours; or
Press coverage of breaking news. This never requires a permit, but is subject to the imposition of restrictions and conditions necessary to protect park resources and public health and safety, and to prevent impairment or derogation of park resources or values.

The full text is available at http://www.blm.gov/nhp/what/commercial/filming/permit.html and at http://www.nps.gov/policy/DOrders/DOrder53.html.

Fees will not be required for still photography as long as the photography takes place where members of the public are generally allowed or where additional administrative costs are not likely. 16 U.S.C. § 4601-6d(b).

Sa ne delectam cu opera unui maestru: ION ZUPCU - de Dinu Lazar la: 29/04/2005 17:18:20

New Artist: Ion Zupcu, Works on Paper.

"As a still life photographer you have control over everything," says
Ion Zupcu. "Nothing moves. Take a still life photographer bent on
minimalism, as Zupcu was when he set out to capture the essence of
paper, and you get a series of images that tell you both everything and
nothing about what the photographer was thinking. "People don't have
time to stop and discuss the way they feel about shapes, styles, and
objects they see," he explains. "So my images are a conversation with
myself, a diary of what I see." He chose the edge of paper as his focus,
"to leave the rest of the image a mystery." For these quiet, restrained
images, Zupcu was both sculptor and photographer, creating objects that leave us guessing at the scale (they are mere inches high). And nothing appears to be holding the paper in place--except, perhaps, the will of the photographer.

We hope you enjoy this new work from Ion Zupcu.

Why God created Eve

1. God was worried that Adam would frequently become lost in the
garden because he would not ask for directions.

2. God knew that one day Adam would require someone to locate and
hand him the remote.

3. God knew Adam would never go out and buy himself a new fig leaf
when his wore out and would therefore need Eve to buy one for him.

4. God knew Adam would never be able to make a doctor's, dentist's or
haircut appointment by himself

5. God knew Adam would never remember which night to put the
garbage on the curb

6. God knew if the world was to be populated, men would never be able
to handle the pain and discomfort of childbearing.

7. As the Keeper of the Garden, Adam would never remember where he
left his tools.

8. Apparently, Adam needed someone to blame his troubles on when God
caught him hiding in the garden

9. As the Bible says, "It is not good for man to be alone."

10. When God finished the creation of Adam, He stepped back,
scratched his head, and said, "I can do better than that."

SEATTLE, Wash. May 13, 2005 Getty Images, Inc. (NYSE: GYI), the world's leading imagery company, announced today that it will acquire Photonica West from the Tokyo-based Amana Group for $51 million in cash.
Photonica produces and distributes two of the world's leading collections of cutting edge, high-end rights-managed imagery from some of the most talented and creative photographers in Europe, the United States and Japan. These collections are considered the "hidden gems" of the imagery business - highly respected by creative professionals but with limited global sales, marketing and distribution. As a result of this acquisition, both Photonica and Iconica will be distributed via gettyimages.com, the de-facto homepage of visual communicators.

The acquisition of the non-Japanese interests of Amana is the first phase of a broader global production and reciprocal distribution relationship between Getty Images, the world leader in imagery and related products and services, and Amana, the leading visual solutions experts in Japan. Getty Images plans to further strengthen its position in the Japanese market by entering into distribution arrangements with Amana to represent Amana's locally relevant content in Japan. Amana will offer some of the major Getty Images collections to its customers in Japan. In addition, Getty Images expects to represent and distribute Amana's imagery to the international market outside of Japan through its unrivaled distribution network.

Getty Images and Amana also plan to co-produce high quality, wholly owned creative photography both in Japan and elsewhere. This joint production capability will provide more choice and higher quality imagery for visual communicators and greater opportunities for photographers everywhere.

"Getty Images and Photonica represent the global gold standards for contemporary, high-end creative imagery," said Jonathan Klein, Getty Images co-founder and CEO. "Combining Getty Images' creative expertise with that of Photonica and Iconica, and leveraging the distribution power of our e-commerce platform, will provide customers with easy access to the very best imagery in the industry, enabling them to do their best work. Furthermore, our relationship with Amana will significantly accelerate our already successful penetration of Japan, the world's second largest market for imagery, and further strengthen gettyimages.com's global role as the de facto home page for visual communicators."

The acquisition is expected to have no impact on earnings per diluted share in 2005, and to be accretive to Getty Images earnings per diluted share in 2006.

Gay men’s brains respond differently to a male odor, researchers find

Posted May 9, 2005

and World Science staff

The brains of gay men react similarly to those of women, and differently from those of other men, to the smell of a chemical in male sweat, researchers say.

The chemical has long been suspected as being a possible pheromone -- a substance whose smell induces a change in physiology or behavior, such as sexual arousal.

Although pheromones are common among animals, there is no substance generally agreed upon by scientists to be a human pheromone. However, researchers are studying several chemicals that are considered possible human pheromones.

One is a substance called AND, related to the sexual hormone testosterone. Another is called EST and is similar to estrogen, another sex hormone.

In a past study, Ivanka Savic of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden and colleagues found that a brain region called the hypothalamus becomes activated when men smell EST and women smell AND, but not vice versa. The hypothalamus is known to have slightly different characteristics in men and women, and to influence sexual behavior.

In the new study, the researchers examined whether brain activation patterns induced by EST and AND corresponded with sexual orientation, rather than with biological gender.

The scientists compared brain activity between homosexual men, and heterosexual men and women, in response to smelling EST, AND, and ordinary odors, such as lavender.

The researchers reported that AND activated the hypothalamus in homosexual men and heterosexual women, but not heterosexual men. Conversely, EST activated the hypothalamus in heterosexual men alone.

All three groups responded to common odors similarly, engaging only brain regions that process smell. These findings indicate that the human brain reacts differently to these potential pheromones compared with common odors, the researchers added, suggesting a link between sexual orientation and brain function.

The findings are published in the online early edition of the research journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week.

That said, the one thing about pro photographers that is also different from those I've found in other industries, they are unique in that they work almost entirely alone in a business model that involves the production and manufacture of a product, its marketing and sales, and its administration. Doctros, lawyers, accountants, you name it, they all may work alone too, but they only need to be proficient at ONE thing to achieve a degree of success: the focus of their practice. Hence, they only do a subset of the tasks that photographers must be good at to succeed at all. What's more, alll of the other "solo professionals" perform a service whose value is very specific and measureable, whereas photographers produce somethng that the client can--at best--only HOPE may work for them. This makes it very hard for them to quantify their value like a doctor might.
What's more, photographer is perceived by non-photographers as something that isn't all that hard, so "where's the beef?"
Because very few people have ALL the skills necessary to do all business tasks well, while also doing well at their trained craft or service, photographers are at a disadvantage because they are more likely to fail if they don't do those other tasks as well. (For examples, a doctor or lawyer doesn't have to do nearly as much ongoing marketing and sales to keep a business going as a photographer must).

In the end, photographers are the most likely to fail at their professions than the others are.

Because of this serious disadvantage, photographers have naturally found benefit in solidarity, and so it has become part of the culture. there is a unifying feeling among photographers that believes that, if we all act together, we can do more than if we try to do it alone.

This was true... before the Internet.
After the Internet, the supply-demand imbalance threw more content (photos) and people into the industry, disrupting the modus operandi.

06 June 2005 - Apple has confirmed the rumours today at the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco that it will over the next two years be transferring to Intel chips for its Apple computer range.

The announcement means that its long term with IBM will come to an end.

Apple said it will begin delivering Macintosh products using Intel microprocessors by this time next year and will have all of its all flagship Macintosh computers using Intel processors by the end of 2007.

The move is thought to have been borne out of a frustration with IBM in recent months over supply of the G5 chip for its desktop models, but also one that could be fitted within Apple’s PowerBook range.

"This is not going to be a transition that happens overnight. It's going to happen over a few years," Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs said.

Both Microsoft and Adobe have promised support for the new chip in what is seen as a good omen to the success of transferring over to a new system.

To encourage developers to switch from PowerPC to Intel, Apple is offering a $999 Developer Transition Kit with 3.6GHz Pentium 4 hardware, OS X 10.4.1, pre-release of XCode 2.1 universal binaries for its premium-level developers.

Consistent with respect for human rights, the practice of tolerance does not mean toleration of social injustice or the abandonment or weakening of one's convictions. It means that one is free to adhere to one's own convictions and accepts that others adhere to theirs. It means accepting the fact that human beings, naturally diverse in their appearance, situation, speech, behaviour and values, have the right to live in peace and to be as they are. It also means that one's views are not to be imposed on others.

Queen Elizabeth and Dolly Parton die on the same day, and they both go before the angel to find out if they'll be admitted to heaven.
Unfortunately, there's only one space left that day, so the angel must decide which of them gets in.
The angel asks Dolly if there's a particular reason why she should go to heaven, whereupon she takes off her top and says,
"Look at these, they're the most perfect breasts God ever
created, and I'm sure it will please God to be able to see them
every day, for eternity."
The angel thanks Dolly, and asks Her Majesty the same question.
The Queen takes a bottle of Perrier out of her purse, shakes it up, and gargles. Then, she spits into the toilet, and pulls the lever.
The angel says, "OK, your Majesty, you may go in."
Dolly is outraged and asks, "What was that all about? I show you two of Gods own perfect creations, and you turn me down.
She simply gargles and she gets in. Would you explain that
to me?"
"Sorry, Dolly," says the angel, "but even in heaven, a royal flush beats a pair, no matter how big they are."

An American Prayer

Do you know the warm progress under the stars?
Do you know we exist?
Have you forgotten the keys to the Kingdom?
Have you been borne yet and are you alive?

Let's reinvent the gods, all the myths of the ages
Celebrate symbols from deep elder forests
(Have you forgotten the lessons
of the ancient war?)

We need great golden copulations

The fathers are cackling in trees of the forest
Our mother is dead in the sea

Do you know we are being led to slaughters by placid admirals
and that fat slow generals are getting obscene on young blood

Do you know we are ruled by T.V.
The moon is a dry blood beast
Guerilla bands are rolling numbers in the next block of green vine
amassing for warfare on innocent herdsmen who are just dying

O great creator of being
grant us one more hour to perform our art
and perfect our lives

The moths and atheists are doubly divine and dying
We live, we die
and death not ends it
Journey we more into the Nightmare
Cling to life our passion'd flower
Cling to cunts and cocks of despair
We got our final vision by clap
Columbus' groin got filled with green death

(I touched her thigh and death smiled)

We have assembled inside this ancient and insane theatre
To propagate our lust for life and flee the swarming wisdom of the streets
The barns are stormed
The windows kept
and only one of all the rest
To dance and save us
With the divine mockery of words
Music inflames temperament

(When the true King's murderers are allowed to roam free
a 1000 magicians arise in the land)

Where are the feasts we were promised
Where is the wine
The New Wine (dying on the vine)

resident mockery
give us an hour for magic
We of the purple glove
We of the starling flight and velvet hour
We of arabic pleasure's breed
We of sundome and the night

Give us a creed
To believe
A night of Lust
Give us trust in
The Night

Give of color
hundred hues
a rich Mandala
for me and you

And for your silky
pillowed house
a head, wisdom
and a bed

Troubled decree
Resident mockery
has claimed thee

We used to believe
in the good old days
We still receive
In little ways

The Things of Kindness
And unsporting brow
Forget and allow

Did you know freedom exists in a school book
Did you know madmen are running our prison
within a jail, within a gaol
within a white free protestant
Maelstrom

We're perched headlong on the edge of boredom
We're reaching for death on the end of a candle
We're trying for something
That's already found us

We can invent Kingdoms of our own
grand purple thrones, those chairs of lust
and love we must, in beds of rust

Steel doors lock in prisoner's screams
and muzak, AM, rocks their dreams
No black men's pride to hoist the beams
while mocking angels sift what seems

To be a collage of magazine dust
Scratched on foreheads of walls of trust
This is just jail for those who must
get up in the morning and fight for such

unusable standards
while weeping maidens
show-off penury and pout
ravings for a mad staff

Wow, I'm sick of doubt
Live in the light of certain
South

Cruel bindings
The servants have the power
dog-men and their mean women
pulling poor blankets over
our sailors
(and where were you in our lean hour)
Milking your moustache?
or grinding a flower?
I'm sick of dour faces
Staring at me from the T.V.
Tower. I want roses in
my garden bower; dig?
Royal babies, rubies
must now replace aborted
Strangers in the mud
These mutants, blood-meal
for the plant that's plowed

They are waiting to take us into the severed garden
Do you know how pale and wanton thrillful
comes death on strange hour
unannounced, unplanned for
like a scaring over-friendly guest you've brought to bed
Death makes angels of us all and gives us wings
where we had shoulders smooth as raven's claws

No more money, no more fancy dress
This other Kingdom seems by far the best
until its other jaw reveals incest
and loose obedience to a vegetable law

I will not go
Prefer a Feast of Friends
To the Giant family
II

Great screaming Christ
Upsy-daisy
Lazy Mary will get you up
upon a Sunday morning

"The movie will begin in 5 moments"
The mindless Voice announced
"All those unseated, will await
The next show"

We filed slowly, languidly
into the hall. The auditorium
was vast, and silent.
As we seated and were darkened
The Voice continued:

"The program for this evening
is not new. You have seen
This entertainment thru and thru.
You've seen your birth, your
life and death; you might recall
all of the rest -- (did you
have a good world when you
died?) -- enough to base
a movie on?"

An iron chuckle rapped our
minds like a fist.

I'm getting out of here
Where're you going?
To the other side of the morning
Please don't chase the clouds
pagodas, temples

Her * gripped him
like a warm friendly
hand.

"It's all right.
All your friends are here."

When can I meet them?
"After you've eaten"
I'm not hungry
"O, we meant beaten"

Silver stream, silvery scream,
impossible concentration

Here come the comedians

Watch them dance

Look at them gesture
How aplomb
So to gesture everyone

Mongols besieging the city of Kaifeng in 1232 used arrows propelled by rockets (though primarily as a psychological weapon).
Knowledge about rocketry seems to have moved with the Mongol invasions—the Arabs are seen as having developed rockets by the thirteenth century and are reported as having used them against Saint Louis in the Seventh Crusade; the Italians were experimenting with rockets by the fifteenth century. A major refinement in the formula for black powder was made in the thirteenth century by Roger Bacon; this resulted in the creation of gunpowder.
All of those people dreamt of sending people to the moon on the tail of a rocket … Even Cyrano de Bergerac (the real one) did that in a poem …
Conrad Hass (1551-1579), German, an artillery engineer and chief of arsenal of the town of Sibiu. Hass wrote about the construction and the flight tests of multistage rockets, apparently the earliest writings in existence about the science of rocket engineering. How about that???

May be correct partially… but Pasteur discovered every single entry from the Babes book…see below. I included some additional date for comparison and scale … The Babes Treaty is a list of the following discoveries … And Pasteur is one of many …

? 1886 Alexandru Ciurcu - construieste prima ambarcatiune cu reactie.
It’s more complicated, Ciurcu e numai un participant … one of two; also, educated in France.
Desire and Victoire Piot (A late eighteenth century French engineer / inventor and the origins of the Vapour Pulse Jet) probably fled France on the out break of the Franco–Prussian war in 1870 finally arriving in London where he tested his first successful pulse jet boats. Desire Piot could well have been inspired by a rocket powered boat developed by Just Buisson and Ciurcu. Not so successful demonstrations of their jet boat on the river Seine in Paris took place from August to December 1886 for the benefit of the French Ministry of Defense.

? 1887 C. I. Istrate - Friedelina si franceinele.
Correct!!!

? 1895 D. Hurmuzescu - descopera electroscopul.
Jean Antoine Nollet (1700–1770) was a clergyman and physicist. In 1748, Nollet invented one of the first electrometers, the electroscope, which detected the presence of electric charge by using electrostatic attraction and repulsion. Nollet later wrote a theory on electrical attraction and repulsion based on the existence of a continuous flow of electrical matter between charged bodies and became the the first professor of experimental physics at the University of Paris.
Many others including George Washington did the same before our guy … 1755 or so …

? 1900 Nicolae Teclu - becul cu reglarea curentului electric si gaz.
Are you serious??? “Becul de labborator cu reglarea curentului de AER si gaz”; big difference!!!
How about Bunsen? Premix (meaning air and gas) burners were the first purpose-designed burners, and they can be traced back more than 100 years to the Bunsen and similar laboratory burners. A premix burner system really consists of two key components, the burner head or nozzle, and the gas-air mixing device that feeds it. In some cases they're built as a single unit. The mixer uses the energy of a pressurized stream of air and/or gas to mix the two and present them to the burner nozzle, which provides an ignition and anchoring point for the flame and controls its shape.

Are you serious?
The first powered heavier-than-air flight took place in 1890 (Clement Ader, steam engine on bat-winged monoplane, 60 yards). The Wrights' 1903 flight (300 yards) was the first photographed heavier-than-air flight. [Correction: not quite true; there exist photos of Lilienthal's non-powered heavier-than-air flights in the 1890s.] After the advent of relatively light combustion engines (such as Benz, Otto, Diesel), other pioneers pursued similar approaches, but no photographs were taken by Richard Pearse (New Zealand, March 1903) and Karl Jatho (August 1903). Finally, the Wrights needed headwinds or catapults to start their planes, so they were not fully self-powered. But Brazil's Santos-Dumont was (1906, first official airplane flight).
Important stuff: Richard Pearse March 31, 1902. Accounts by witnesses of the flight vary, from "50 to 400 yards in length", but it seems most likely that it was around 350 yards long, and ending prematurely when the flying machine landed in a large hedge - 4 metres off the ground ! The aircraft was the first to use proper ailerons, instead of the inferior wing warping system that the Wright's used. The flying machine also had a modern tricycle type landing gear, thus negating the need for ramps, slides, or skids. Any suitable road would do. The flying machine was aerodynamically crude, for sure, but did the job on the day, and in fact for months afterwards. By the end of July 1903, Pearse had achieved flights of around one kilometre in length, and perhaps even more amazingly, some of them included turns ! An absolutely fantastic achievement for the time. Pearce also built the engine, which was estimated at about 15 - 22hp, but hampered by a much cruder propeller than the Wright's machine.

William Grove produced the first fuel cell in 1839 over 150 years ago. He based his experiment on the fact that sending an electric current through water splits the water into its component parts of hydrogen and oxygen. So, Grove tried reversing the reaction - combining hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity and water. This is the basis of a simple fuel cell. The term “fuel cell” was coined later in 1889 by Ludwig Mond and Charles Langer, who attempted to build the first practical device using air and industrial coal gas.

Pasteur was known as the father of stereochemistry, but his contributions to microbiology and medicine were greater. Pasteur discovered anaerobic bacteria and two silkworm diseases. It was he who discovered that if you take a microbe that causes a particular disease, for instance, smallpox, and make a weakened form of it, that weakened smallpox microbe can be used to fight off the stronger smallpox microbes. Doctors now inoculate people against all kinds of diseases and, for a time, had almost eradicated smallpox. Pasteur also invented the anthrax vaccine, the cholera vaccine, and the rabies vaccine. He died in 1895.

? 1916 D. Danielopolu - actiunea hipertensiva a digitalei.
The man credited with the introduction of digitalis into the practice of medicine was William Withering. Withering was born in Wellington, Shropshire, England in 1741. He followed in the medical footsteps of his father who was an apothecary-surgeon. Withering received his MD degree in 1766. As an individual, William Withering was an extremely giving person. He would personally see and treat two or three thousand poor patients a year limiting him to making about 1000 British pounds as compared to his contemporary doctors who made 5000 British pounds per year. Withering published about 19 articles during his lifetime. After fighting a long battle with tuberculosis, William Withering, the father of digitalis medicine, died on October 6 1799, at the age of 58.

big earthquake in Mexico - primita de la un prieten - de Horia D la: 30/06/2005 21:39:23
(la: Trancaneala Aristocrata "3")
A big earthquake with the strength of 8.1 on the Richter scale has hit
Mexico. Two million Mexicans have died and over a million are injured.

The country is totally ruined and the government doesn't know where to
start with providing help to rebuild. The rest of the world is in shock.

Canada is sending troops to help the Mexican army. Saudi Arabia is sending oil. Other Latin American countries are sending supplies. The European community (except France) is sending food and money.

The United States, not to be outdone, is sending two million replacement
Mexicans.

God Bless America!

Multumesc Cico - de ampop la: 11/07/2005 08:52:56
(la: biblia satanica)
"Created in the image of God to share in the communion of Trinitarian life, human beings are persons who are so constituted as to be able freely to embrace this communion. Freedom is the divine gift that enables human persons to choose the communion which the triune God offers to them as their ultimate good. But with freedom comes the possibility of the failure of freedom. Instead of embracing the ultimate good of participation in the divine life, human persons can and do turn away from it in order to enjoy transitory or even only imaginary goods. Sin is precisely this failure of freedom, this turning away from the divine invitation to communion".

Patterson insusi spunea:

“Unfortunately, and unknown to me, there was a creationist in my audience with a hidden tape recorder. A transcript of my talk was produced and circulated among creationists, and the talk has since been widely, and often inaccurately, quoted in creationist literature”

"I put a case for the difficulties and problems with evolution, specifically in the field of systematics. I was too naïve and foolish to guess what might happen: the talk was taped by a creationist who passed the tape to [creationist] Luther Sunderland. ...I was putting a case for discussion, as I thought off the record, and was speaking only about systematics, a specialised field" (Fezer 1984: 5).

In ea afirma printre altele:

"In terms of mechanism ... the neutral theory of molecular evolution is a scientific theory; it can be put into law-like form: changes in DNA that are less likely to be subject to natural selection occur more rapidly. This law is tested every time homologous DNA sequences are compared. ... But neutral theory assumes (or includes) the truth of the general theory - common ancestry or Darwin's 'descent with modification' - and 'misprints' shared between species, like the pseudogenes or reversed Alu sequences, are (to me) incontrovertible evidence of common descent" (p 119).

"Because creationists lack scientific research to support such theories as a young earth ... a world-wide flood ... or separate ancestry for humans and apes, their common tactic is to attack evolution by hunting out debate or dissent among evolutionary biologists. ... I learned that one should think carefully about candor in argument (in publications, lectures, or correspondence) in case one was furnishing creationist campaigners with ammunition in the form of 'quotable quotes', often taken out of context" (p 122).
