Right-wing Romanian politician to visit Israel

Corneliu Vadim Tudor, the head of a radical right political party in Romania, intends to visit Israel in March.




News of his intention was relayed by Israeli businessman Nati Meir, who has been in contact with Tudor, the leader of the Greater Romania Party (PRM).

Haaretz has learned that Romanian President Ion Iliescu also intends to visit Israel at the end of March.

Meir, presenting himself as Tudor's adviser for overseas affairs, told Reuters news agency that Tudor will "seek forgiveness at the Western Wall."

In a speech given to Romania's parliament in 2002, and on other occasions, Tudor has claimed that Romania did not take part in the murder of Jews during the Holocaust. But Tudor is now aware that the Holocaust transpired in Romania, said Meir, adding that Tudor has sent Yad Vashem a letter about his country's culpability. Yad Vashem spokesmen, however, said they do not know anything about such a statement.

Since he announced his intention to take part in Romania's presidential elections, scheduled for September, Tudor has made several attempts to shed his reputation for anti-Semitism. But officials from Israel's Foreign Ministry and Yad Vashem believe Tudor's new stance is motivated by electoral calculations.

In past years, Tudor made several statements against Jews and foreigners and his party's official journal has been a warehouse for crude anti-Semitic opinions.

With Meir's help, Tudor met two months ago with Israeli media consultant Ayal Arad, and asked to retain his services. Arad said he is still considering whether or not to accept Tudor's offer. According to Arad, during their meeting, Tudor asked him about how he might persuade Jewish communities that he is not an anti-Semite.

At the end of November 2003, Tudor held a press conference, and said he retracts statements he made in the past about Jews. He stated that he "loves Jews," and denounced statements made by Iliescu to Haaretz about how the Holocaust wasn't distinctive to the Jews. Last month, Tudor dedicated a bronze statue of Yitzhak Rabin in Romania. Tudor invited Rabin's children to the ceremony, but they declined.

Ze'ev Schwartz, who chairs the association of Romanian-born Israelis, dismissed Tudor's recent performances as "a new element in the drama."

"This man is a Holocaust denier, and we simply do not believe him," Schwartz said. He added that he intends to help sponsor protest demonstrations of Holocaust survivors and Romanian natives during Tudor's visit.

JERUSALEM (AP) - Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Wednesday
defended his plan to dismantle virtually all Jewish
settlements in Gaza, amid new signs that the proposal is
threatening the stability of his government.
Ten lawmakers from the ruling Likud Party sent a letter to
Sharon threatening to abandon the prime minister if he
moves forward with his plans without their consent.
«We announce beforehand that it will be very difficult
for us to support this plan without the approval of the
Likud institutions on this sensitive subject,» the
lawmakers wrote. They added that they would not support the
entry of the opposition Labor Party into the government.
A senior official said Sharon would put his unilateral
disengagement plan - including removing some settlements
and imposing a boundary on the West Bank if peace talks
fail - before a national referendum, as demanded by Likud
lawmakers. The official, speaking on condition of
anonymity, said Sharon would welcome the idea of putting
the plan before the people, because the issue cuts across
ideological lines and «has overwhelming support among the
public.»
Labor said Tuesday that it would back Sharon's plan,
assuring him of a parliamentary majority even if two
ultranationalist parties quit the government.
But one of the lawmakers who signed Wednesday's letter,
Yuli Edelstein, claimed the group had enough support from
other Likud members to block any parliamentary majority for
Sharon.
Even if the effort fails, the letter reflected the
internal divisions that Sharon faces over his Gaza pullout
plan.
Sharon on Tuesday shrugged off the growing threats, saying
he is determined to go ahead with plans to remove 17
settlements in Gaza and three in the West Bank without
waiting for a peace deal with the Palestinians. He said he
would try to form a new governing coalition rather than
back down.
The prime minister's surprise announcement Monday has
divided Israelis into two camps: those who believe Sharon,
for decades the main architect of Jewish settlement
expansion, is truly changing course; and those who suspect
him of trying to sow confusion and deflect attention from a
widening corruption probe against him.
Sharon said Wednesday that his plan is not related to the
corruption probe, Israel radio reported. Speaking to
reporters at the Israeli parliament building, he said he
was moving forward in spite of his legal troubles, not
because of them.
Sharon, who has denied wrongdoing, is to be questioned by
police Thursday on suspicion he accepted bribes from an
Israeli real-estate developer.
Commentators said whatever Sharon's motives, his
declaration has created irreversible facts, and no future
prime minister could demand to hold on to parts of Gaza in
a peace deal with the Palestinians. «The words that were
uttered can never be taken back,» commentator Dan Margalit
wrote in the Maariv daily.
Opinion polls suggested that Sharon has broad public
support for dismantling most Gaza settlements, increasingly
seen by many Israelis as a security burden. Israel controls
one-third of the strip, while 1.3 million Palestinians
share the rest.
In his first public comment on the issue Tuesday, Sharon
avoided mention of Gaza but said he was determined to press
ahead with the removal of settlements.
«Not only is this difficult for the settlers, but also,
it is more painful for myself than anyone else in Israel,»
Sharon said during a visit of the coastal city of Ashkelon.
«But I've reached a decision and I am going to carry it
out.»
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia told Palestinian
radio he wants to see «deeds, not words. We want to see
them leaving the whole Gaza Strip, leaving Gaza as
liberated Palestinian land and leaving us to concentrate on
their withdrawal from the West Bank.»
In the West Bank on Wednesday, the army said it had
arrested a senior operative in the militant Al Aqsa
Martyrs' Brigades in the village of Tubas. Palestinian
sources identified the man as Jihad Sawafta, who they said
had escaped an Israeli assassination attempt in 2002.
Senior aides to Sharon and Qureia were scheduled to meet
Wednesday in hopes of arranging a meeting between the two
prime ministers, the two sides confirmed. A summit would be
a crucial step in reviving the U.S.-backed «road map»
peace plan.
The talks were to focus on Israel's contentious West Bank
separation barrier - which the Palestinians oppose - and
Palestinian efforts to persuade militant groups to halt
attacks on Israelis, Palestinian officials said.
Efforts to bring the two men together have faltered since
Qureia took office in October, and the road map has been
stalled for months. But Qureia has come under pressure
recently from the United States and Egypt, a key mediator
between Israel and the Palestinians, to agree to a meeting.
The road map aims for an independent Palestinian state,
alongside Israel, by 2005.
«This is maybe their last opportunity to implement the
road map,» a senior Israeli official, speaking on
condition of anonymity, said of a possible summit.
A top security adviser to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
on Wednesday accused the United States of «blackmailing»
the Palestinians.
Jibril Rajoub said the Americans have threatened to
disengage from the peace process unless the Palestinians
arrest those responsible for an October bomb blast in Gaza
that killed three Americans traveling in a diplomatic
convoy.
«You know that the Americans stopped their involvement
waiting for the results of the investigation,» Rajoub told
foreign journalists. «I think that this is blackmail.»
American officials have said they are disappointed with
the lack of cooperation by Palestinian security forces in
the search for the perpetrators.
Sharon has said repeatedly in recent weeks that he plans
to take unilateral steps in the West Bank and Gaza -
dismantling some settlements, redeploying troops and
imposing a boundary - if there is no progress on the road
map in the coming months.

N-am intentionat sa jignesc pe nimeni si nu stiam ca "jidan" e un termen insultator; daca e imi cer scuze. Cum s-ar traduce atunci? --- ca n-am un dictionar englez-roman la indemina.

In medieval England, Jews, though engaged in many pursuits, were particularly
familiar as money-lenders, their activities being publicly regulated for them
by the Crown, whose proteges they were. In private, Christians also practised
money-lending, though forbidden to do so by Canon Law. Thus the name of Jew
came to be associated in the popular mind with usury and any extortionate
practices that might be supposed to accompany it, and gained an opprobrious
sense.

Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose photographs defined the
20th century, died on August 3rd at the age of 95

ALTHOUGH his name was familiar almost everywhere, far
more so indeed than his work, Henri Cartier-Bresson
himself was not a familiar sight. With his alert blue
eyes and a coloured handkerchief knotted round his
neck, he would wander the streets near his home on
Paris's rue de Rivoli and seldom be recognised. One of
the greatest photographers of the 20th century was
himself rarely photographed.

In his lifetime, he travelled to all corners of the
earth, capturing images of some of the most
extraordinary moments of 20th-century history—the
Spanish civil war, the liberation of Paris after the
second world war and the funeral of Mahatma Gandhi. At
the same time he framed and preserved less famous
moments, elevating them with his genius so that they
somehow seemed to capture the essence of life itself.

His unequalled ability to seize a millisecond in time
was uncanny. In his book “The Decisive Moment”,
published in 1952, he wrote: “It is the simultaneous
recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the
significance of an event as well as a precise
organisation of forms, which give that event its
proper expression.” He was never very interested in
the technology of photography, in the effects that
could be obtained during developing and editing in a
dark room. It was all about the thrill of the chase,
the chance to seize a moment.

The man who first inspired Mr Cartier-Bresson was a
photographer called Martin Munkacsi, whose picture of
naked African boys running into Lake Tanganyika in
1931 persuaded him to take photography seriously. “I
couldn't believe that such a thing could be caught on
camera,” he said, “so I grabbed my Leica and went out
into the street.”

Between 1932 and 1935, he lived rough in Italy, Mexico
and Spain where he took some of his most memorable
images. Back in Paris he worked with Jean Renoir, a
film director, and ended up playing the unlikely role
of an English servant in the director's masterpiece,
“La Règle du Jeu”. He was a prisoner-of-war for three
years, and after the war was one of the founders of
the Magnum agency, a trail-blazing photographers'
co-operative. In 1948 he went on the road again,
mostly to India and China (in time for the fall of
Chiang Kai-shek), in an age when the images of
photojournalists like him filled the pages of picture
magazines that were, in the pre-television era,
hungrily viewed by millions.

Unassuming genius
For the last quarter of a century, Mr Cartier-Bresson
eschewed photography, taking only the occasional
snapshot of friends and family, and turning his
attention to drawing. (He trained originally as a
painter, his early work influenced by his friend, the
surrealist artist Max Ernst.) He maintained that he
scarcely wanted to discuss photography any more. “It's
like when you're divorced”, he said, “and people keep
asking about your former wife. There's something
indecent about it.”

He settled into a quiet life in France—in Paris and in
the small house that he owned for some 30 years in the
Lubéron, a region in the south of the country, to the
east of Avignon. And there he died on Tuesday August
3rd, just less than three weeks away from his 96th
birthday.

Mr Cartier-Bresson always said that to be a great
photographer you had to be unintrusive. “For me,
photography is very much a physical pleasure—it's like
hunting, except that we don't kill.” At the height of
his career he would stalk his subjects, and his quarry
would often be unaware that it had been captured on
film. His desire to remain out of the limelight stayed
with him to the end, including his wish to hold back
the world's photographers from the funeral of one of
the greatest of them.

His funeral was a private affair attended by some 50
family and close friends. Only after it had ended did
the French Ministry of Culture make an official
announcement of his death. And the next day, August
5th, many of his most famous images were splashed
across the front pages of newspapers the world over: a
woman slapping an informer she recognises at a
deportation camp in Dessau in 1945; Muslim women in
Srinagar, Kashmir, praying to the sun as it rises over
the distant Himalayas; and a French family picnicking
by the River Marne in 1938, almost a last pre-war
moment of stillness.

Of Mr Cartier-Bresson's death, President Jacques
Chirac said: “With him, France loses a genius
photographer, a true master, and one of the most
gifted artists of his generation.” But it is not only
France's loss. Mr Cartier-Bresson's fame, which grew
despite his efforts to avoid it, reminds a much wider
world of its persistent admiration for unassuming
genius, and of the dwindling stock of targets for that
admiration.

de 3 ori /saptamana cate un pic din fiecare sau mai mult dintr-unul ,in functie de circumstante: basket,fotbal,mers pe bicicleta,mult mers pe jos,de obicei in natura,pe munte,innot........

iarna ski cat se poate de mult!!!!!

la televizor campionatele interesate de fotbal(soccer cum zic soccerii de aici:):),numai dupa optimi de finala insa.....sporturile de iarna(ski de tot felul,sanie,patinaj artistic), ciclism si un pic de formula 1.plus orice concurs care are vreun romanas prin el si in special olimpicii...

"giocondel" are 24 de ani,sa ne traiasca si la multi ani!

Ma refer la alegerile pentru Presendentia Romaniei care vor avea loc acest an.Daca locuiti in Anglia probabil ca nu aveti ce cauta cu scaunelul pliant in Paris,ci mai degraba la Londra.Noroc ca sunt si pe acolo romani amatori de o partida de table/sah/septica.

Si eu, ca multi altii, am plecat din Romania pentru ca am inteles din timp ca sansele de a trai decent in tara natala sunt minime si ca trebuie sa faci prea multe compromisuri.

Am inteles din timp ca probabilitatea de a-mi petrece intreaga viata concentrata pe nivelul supravietuirii si al luptei cu morile de vant este mult prea mare si ca asta nu imi va permite sa ma concentrez asupra dezvoltarii calitatilor mele inerente , ca ma va trage inapoi si ma va aduce probabil intr-o stare de abrutizare din care imi va fi greu sa ies (chiar daca suferinta te invata si lucruri profunde si iti ofera perspective diferite asupra existentei).

Acum sunt rezident in America si nu planuiesc sa imi petrec intreaga viata aici.Planul pe care ca eu si sotul meu l-am facut este sa facem aici banii si sa ii cheltuim cu folos in alte tari de pe planeta, sa calatorim cat mai mult si sa servim pe cei din jur in masura posibilitatilor si puterilor noastre si la un moment dat vom locui un pic si in Romania,de ce nu(cateva luni-max un an pentru ca sotul meu ar vrea sa invete limba romana pe viu)? Asta este planul,multi veti spune ca socoteala de acasa nu se potriveste cu restul povestii.Vom vedea.Pana acum, cu determinare,perseverenta si puritate a motivatiilor, am reusit in tot ceea ce mi-am propus si care s-a dovedit a fi benefic atat pentru mine cat si pentru ceilalti.Am 23 de ani,deci entuziasmul tineretii poate fi considerat un atu in plus.

In Romania nu ma voi restabili pentru ca este o tara care inca fura cel mai de pret dar al omului: demnitatea.Si nu vad sa fie posibila o schimbare esentiala a mentalitatii in urmatorii 100 de ani.

tinand cont ca am citit povestea respectiva acum vreo 15 ani....ori mi
se pare ca imi amintesc, ori am inebunit de-a binelea si amestec toate povestile nemuritoare la un loc..dar cred ca el era cam sucarit si nu stiu prin ce intamplare ajunge intr-o pestera unde nu trebuia sa fie martor la ceva si acolo este transformat in tap...si pe urma cred ca amandoi traiesc fericiti pana la adanci batraneti,tap si capra ziua si noaptea sot si sotie...sau...dupa ce vede si el cum e sa fii alt animal decat om,ii transforma o zana buna in oameni inapoi si fac o nunta mare???Na' ca acum am prins virusul si o sa ma obsedeze povestea...poate isi aminteste altcineva adevaratul final!

Desi am fost creati in esenta Nobili si inzestrati cu pretioase daruri Divine: ratiune si liber arbitru , in ultima instanta, inimile si mintile noastre sunt mult prea neincapatoare pentru a-L cuprinde pe Dumnezeu in intregime sau pentru a-L explica.

Cu cat incerci sa explici mai mult ceva ce nu poti intelege sau imagina, cu atat de indepartezi de adevar. Frumusetea consta in preocuparea in sine: de a dori cunoastere, constientizare, de a fii indragostit de ceea ce nu poti cuprinde in intregime in fiinta ta..astfel de mii de ani, de cand lumea, oamenii si-au dat cu parerea despre esenta Divinitatii...Multi au pornit razboaie in numele a ceea ce ei credeau ca este Adevarul despre Dumnezeu...majoritatea omenilor insa prefera sa discute, sa faca speculatii, sa isi lase imaginatia sa zboare in lumi cat mai metafizice, poate-poate ca vor prinde o sclipire a ceea ce ESTE de Fapt...

Si eu am parerea mea despre Divinitate, despre Dumnezeu..ca toti ceilalti oameni.Numai ca simt ca din moment ce L-am numit, am cazut intr-o grava eroare: am limitat ceea ce nu are limite ...si totusi cum altfel poti comunica, decat cu ajutorul cuvintelor,nu???Oricum,imi place sa asist la conversatii pe aceasta tema desi trebuie sa recunoastem ca a incerca sa Explicam Natura Divinitatii este ca si cum ai incerca sa explici unuia ce nu a vazut niciodata o portocala,gustul acesteia: "pai sa vezi mai ca portocala e rotunda, si are o culoare...portocalie desigur..si are un strat de coaja, care nu se mananca..si apoi fructul in sine care e dispus in mici felioare si foarte zemos in mod ideal...etc etc....omul va sfarsi prin a crede ca stie totul despre portocala dar nu va fi simtit gustul....va fi pierdut esenta portocalei".

Celor ce Cred nu voi decat a le spune ca Dumnezeu este mai aproape de noi decat propriile noastre vene si sange.Nu trebuie decat sa continuam sa cautam,sa fim insetati dupa aroma Sa si vesnic indragostiti de Creatie in totalitatea Ei.. candva ceea ce ne apare astazi ca mister,va fi dezvaluit..cel mai sigur in viata de dincolo cand totul va deveni evident .Pana atunci,Rabdare si consecventa si fermitate in Incercari si dificultati.!!

Celor ce nu cred, le amintesc acel pariu al lui (descartes???- e mult timp de cand am facut liceul): decat sa nu cred in Dumnezeu si El sa existe, mai bine sa cred si sa nu existe...ceva de genul asta oricum...In final insa (de aia e frumoasa viata noastra) fiecare alege ce il taie mintea si pana la urma tot Acolo vom ajunge cu totii, poate mai repede sau mai incet unii decat altii, in functie de cum Hotaraste Cel ce ne-a creat.Totul tine de evolutia noastra spirituala si de darurile Divine.De aceea e mai bine sa ne abtinem de la a ne judeca unii pe altii, pentru ca niciunul dintre noi nu stie care ii va fi sfarsitul.De multe ori s-a intamplat ca pe patul mortii un om ferm in credinta sa isi intoarca fata de la Dumnezeu, pe cand un altul ce nu credea in nimic sa si-o intoarca spre Oceanul Milostivirii Sale...

Suntem cu totii creati din aceeasi esenta si inzestrati cu capacitati spirituale similare.Rangul nostru difera si se masoare prin : apropiere sau departare de noi Insine,deci de Dumnezeu.Tinta si drumul sunt aceleasi , doar drumetul difera si in functie de alegerile pe care le facem,ajungem cu efort mai mult sau mai putin ACASA.Dar tot Acolo vom ajunge cu totii.In Unitate, imuabilitate,unde nu exista limitari temporale sau spatiale,unde nu exista nume, religie, culoare, gen sau conturi bancare.

Exista speranta atat timp cat intelgem ,simtim intim in sufletul nostru ca Dreptatea lui Dumnezeu ( pentru cei ce cred in judecata) este intrecuta de Iubirea si milostivirea Sa.

doua lucruri as dori sa aduc in discutie, oarecum paradoxale:

1) DE CE OARE OAMENII considera ca pedeapsa capitala este cu mult mai greu de suportat decat prizonierat pe viata??de obicei nu dureaza decat cateva secunde, si chiar daca mai sunt si erori si dureaza mai mult sau se desfasoaar mai oribil decat ar trebui, la o adica intr-un scurt timp l-ai trimis pe lumea cealalta..si gatha...Daca ii iei omului libertatea si il obligi sa traiasca ani in sir cu consecintele actiunilor sale, eu cred ca il pedepsesti si mai bine si in acelasi timp ii acorzi si o sansa de a se remedia cumva in fata lui Dumnezeu.

Dreptatea este stalpul de baza al societatii in masura in care reusim sa o practicam.Insa nu e bine sa ne autonumim justitionari supremi si sa luam vitile oamenilor fara a clipi.

2)NU SUNT PENTRU PEDEAPSA CAPITALA pentru ca simt ca cel ce este pedepsit intr-un mod atat de drastic aici, va fi privit cu mai multa ingaduinta dincolo.Daca pentru pentru faptul ca a comis o crima de orice fel, este "rasplatit" de societate cu o crima..atunci socoteala ajunge cam la egalitate si sunt mari sanse ca in lumea de dincolo sa fie privit cu ingaduinta si nu judecat atatd e aspru.In fond a platit deja cu viata,cu sansa de a se remedia, de a-si pune in practica liberul arbitru si a-si transforma sufletul.

In general, protestantii Reformei sunt avocati ai bisericilor teritoriale, suportate si protejate de Stat, incorporând sub disciplina lor intreaga populatie si aducându-i pe noii nascuti intre membrii ei, prin botezul copiilor. In contrast cu practicile protestante, dar in acord cu convingerile anabaptistilor si menonitilor, baptistii insista asupra faptului ca in Biserica nu se poate intra decât in mod voluntar, negând astfel valoarea botezului copiilor, autoritatea bisericii asupra intregii populatii dintr-un anumit teritoriu si orice forma de constrângere a constiintei care s-ar putea naste din unirea Bisericii cu Statul. Aceasta pozitie ii aseaza pe baptisti ca precursori si gruparii asa-numitelor biserici de credinciosi sau de pocaiti. In acelasi timp, aceasta pozitie a fost samânta din care s-au nascut toate formele moderne de civilizatie.
